Considéré comme le petit frère de Subway Art, Spraycan Art est paru en 1987. Il connaitra un succès immédiat car pour la première fois un ouvrage dédié au Graffiti ne se cantonne pas à sa source qu'est NYC mais va à la rencontre des artistes et de leurs œuvres à travers la planète.

Derrière le livre on retrouve le photographe Henry Chalfant qui s'est livré à un véritable tour du monde Graffiti de la fin des années 80. On commence bien entendu avec New-York où, le métro devenant de plus en plus difficile à peindre, les graffeurs décrivent leur transition massive vers les murs. On y retrouve de nombreux artistes dont certains sont encore actifs aujourd'hui : Revolt, Futura2000, Seen, T-Kid, Bio…

L'auteur fait ensuite escale dans une série de villes américaines (dont Los Angeles) avant de partir à l'étranger à la rencontre des scènes européennes de Londres, Paris (en compagnie de Bando et Mode2), Amsterdam (avec notamment Shoe), Vienne, Barcelone et bien d'autres métropoles du vieux continent. Le voyage se termine par l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande.

Ce livre qui documente la propagation du phénomène graff dans le monde est un indispensable pour tout ceux qui désirent en savoir plus sur l'histoire du mouvement.
