Témoignage de Madame Thyssen recueilli en 2022 :

"Mon mari, Jean-Marie Thyssen, fut architecte au Congo, employé à ce titre par l’ONL (Office National du Logement) de 1963 à 1969, moment où il y devint directeur technique et ce jusqu’en 1973, année de son retour en Belgique.

Il aimait l’Afrique, les Africains et leur art. 
Sensibilisé s’en doute à ce dernier par le Frère Joseph Cornet (Grand spécialiste et amoureux de l’Art africain) qui fut son directeur durant ses études à l’institut Saint Luc à Liège et avec lequel il eut de nombreux contacts lors de ce long séjour à Kinshasa. 

Il eut également des contacts répétés avec de nombreux Africains, dont ses dessinateurs et autres membres du personnel de l’ONL. 
Il eut de ce fait l’occasion d’acquérir des pièces, repérées dans les demeures et parfois encore utilisées ou qui lui étaient proposées (son goût pour elles étant bien connu) lors de décès par exemple.

C’est ainsi qu’il s’est trouvé notamment en possession d’un très beau tamtam provenant d’une case royale. 
Ce tamtam a été vendu par moi, devenue veuve, à un musée de Munich. 
Le grand âge s’affirmant, mes enfants ne manifestant pas d’intérêt particulier pour cet art, je souhaite aujourd’hui donner “une nouvelle vie” à ces objets et à leur histoire."
