 The full title is ‘The Golfers: A Grand Match Played over the Links of St Andrews on the Day of the Annual Meeting of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club'

According to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery 'The centrepiece of the action is a two ball foursomes match in which Sir David Baird and Sir Ralph Anstruther take on Major Hugh Lyon Playfair and John Campbell of Saddell. Incomplete records do not reveal whether such a match actually took place, but there is no reason to suppose it did not.'  The original painting by Charles Lees was completed in 1847. Three years later, Wagstaff's black-and-white line engraving was published by Alexander Hill in 1850 and can be seen in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the R & A collection. Some prints were then coloured..."  

The picture contains over fifty portraits of real people and as such constitutes a veritable ‘who’s who’ of the Scottish golf world at that time. The cast include thirteen past captains of the Club, various medal winners and a good selection of prominent professionals.
