John James Audubon (1785-1851). Original antique print from FIRST EDITION ROYAL OCTAVO, Birds of America (1840-44). These fine prints exhibit a remarkable amount of attention to quality and detail. Audubon is famous for the exceptional dynamism of animals, never seen before, making natural history scenes something extremely alive, realistic and innovative for the time characterized by static subjects. These original prints are very popular and highly collectable.

Excellent paper quality and in fine condition, no cuts, damages or holes present, beautiful colours and amazing detail. Stone lithograph with original hand colour. There is no plate mark or watermark. The white paper is somewhat stiff, like a card stock. This first edition had a circulation of only 1000-1200 complete sets. These prints are quite rare.

Paper size: approximate Width 26.3 x Height 16.7 cm (10.5 x 6.6 inches). Intact and wide margins. Usual signs of aging for a 160 year old work.

This first royal octavo edition of Birds of America by J.J. Audubon was printed and hand coloured by J.T. Bowen in Philadelphia and New York from 1840-44. EXCEPT plate #s 136-150, which were completed by George Endicott. These prints also bear the plate number in the upper right-hand corner and the subscription number in the upper left. 

Author/Artist: John James Audubon was an American self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist. Audubon was born in Les Cayes in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) on his father's sugarcane plantation. He was the son of Lieutenant Jean Audubon, a French naval officer from the south of Brittany. Audubon combined his interests in art and ornithology in a project to make a complete pictorial record of all North American bird and animal species. He was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, a color-plate book titled The Birds of America, is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. Audubon is also known for identifying 25 new species. Following the success of The Birds of America, another octavo sized publication, by the Audubon and sons, called the Quadrupeds of North America, and consisting of 155 different mammal prints, was first published from 1849-54, as the 1st edition. He is the eponym of the National Audubon Society, and his name adorns a large number of towns, neighborhoods, and streets across the United States. Dozens of scientific names first published by Audubon are still in use by the scientific community.
