Bridewealth stone "Je". Stone (green slate?), plant fibers and wool. Dani people. Papua New Guinea. Good condition. Early 20th. century. Cm. 20 x 55h.(8 x 22 inches).  
These large, relatively thin, polished and decorated ‘blades’ in green slate were important objects of value for the Dugum Dani in the Baliem Valley in the highlands of New Guinea (today: Irian, Jaya). They were used for the payment of the bride price in marriage transactions, and in major bartering negotiations between families.
