Wonderful George IV Old Sheffield silver plate meat dome cloche / food cover. Of lobed, melon shape with a beautiful ornate handle shaped like scrolling leaves and accented with flowers. To the front of the cloche is a sterling silver insert engraved with a family crest of an arm holding a sword.

Marked with a cross over a globe - the mark for Blagden, Hodgson & Co, Sheffield, c. 1820's.

Old Sheffield Plate is the process of fusing a layer of silver on to a layer of copper. The process was discovered by Thomas Boulsover in 1742; it was replaced by cheaper electroplating around 1840.

Very good antique condition. Some light wear to silvering and scuffing commensurate with age and use; few small dents in the area underneath the handle; small nicks to the base border.
