Halssnoer “Sungshi” met kralen uit gekleurd koraal van de Ao Naga.

Deze halssnoeren werden gedragen door de Naga vrouwen tijdens feesten en festivals waaraan zij deelnemen overladen met halskettingen, arm- en enkelbanden, welke hun sociale status binnen de gemeenschap aanduiden. De sluiting bestaat uit een stuk buffelbeen.

De "Naga's" zijn een etnische groep met een onmiskenbare gemeenschappelijke identiteit welke leven in het noordoosten van India en Myanmar in een bijzonder ruig gebied, in en rond de Indiase staat Nagaland. Ze worden tot de Adivasi (scheduled tribes) gereken.

De Naga's behoren tot de laatste groepen van koppensnellers in Azië: hun moed werd gemeten aan het aantal afgehakte hoofden van overwonnen krijgers behorende tot vijandelijke stammen. In de jaren '30 bekeerden de meeste gemeenschappen zich tot het christendom na het bezoek aan de regio door christelijke missionarissen.
