African janus mask. Recognizable by the double faces. 

The mask would have been owned by a chief. Today masks of this type and a number of others are used mainly for the decoration of the chief's hut, but they are still danced on rare occasions. When danced, the mask expressed the power and authority of the chief. Geometric designs filled with red white and blue colorful pigments reflected the chief's prestige.
By dancing with the masks they reassured the spirits and they warned the community to observe the rules and responsibilities.
