Couple of Djenné Thinkers in terracotta - Mali 

Djenné, the centre of the Circle with the same name, located at 130 km at the southwest of the regional capital of Mopti, at about 570 km at the northeast of the national capital, Bamako, is one of the most ancient cities of sub-Saharan Africa.  Inhabited since 250 BC, the site of Djenné has developed and became a market and an important town for trans-Saharan gold trade. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the city became a centre for the dissemination of Islam. Characterised by an intensive and remarkable use of the land, especially regarding its architecture, the town is famous for its mosque, its civil constructions, its monumental houses with elaborate walls and its urban fabric. Its traditional houses, adapted to seasonal flooding, are built on small hills; the annual flooding of the Niger River, and its tributaries, is an essential natural phenomenon, observable in the region of Djenné and throughout the entire inner delta.
