The Taotie is the artistic image of the spirits of ancestors, represented in the form of a wild animal and therefore the symbol of access to the world of spirits and ancestors

The taotie motif is a stylised and symmetrical representation of an imaginary animal that borrows some of its features from the dragon. Some other aspects are similar to tigers, even cattle or sheep. The animal is described as a ferocious, horned creature with bulging eyes under thick eyebrows, whose half jaw is adorned with sharp fangs (the lower jaw is absent). The term tao tie is sometimes translated as ‘glutton’, which is also known for its voracity.

It can be viewed in two ways:
- either as two kui dragons facing each other, snout to snout, shown in profile. Then they have only one leg and their tail draws a volute.
- or like a mask, with bulging eyes, horns, fangs, a jaw...

In Feng Shui, the dragon is an influential and sacred symbol believed to create precious celestial Chi, bringing strength, power and good destiny into our homes and workplaces.
