A fine ancient Canaanite bronze statuette of a female figure, possibly a worshipper, portrayed standing with her hands held to her head. The figure is shown wearing a thick belt and an elongated headpiece. Facial and anatomical features are rendered in a stylised manner, with emphasised eyes, nose and mouth. Some earthy encrustations remain on the surface. 

Canaan was a Semitic-speaking region in the ancient Near East during the late second millennium BC. The name “Canaan” corresponds to the Levant, and more specifically to the areas of the Southern Levant. The word “Canaanites” designates various indigenous populations, both those who were settled, and nomadic groups throughout the regions of the Southern Levant or Canaan. The pose of the figure here portrayed might be referred to a ceremonial or religious dance or to an act of devotion. Bronze statuettes would have been cast in the shape of idols, worshippers or deities; the two most important gods of the Canaanite religion included the storm god Baal and the head of the Canaanite pantheon, the god El, usually represented seated. Both gods were highly worshipped across the Near East in the 2nd Millennium BC.
