Constance Rousseau

Born in 1810, died in Paris in 1892, Ferdinand Barbedienne created and directed one of the most important art foundries of the 19th century. In addition to his own production, he worked for the most famous sculptors such as Clésinger, Carrier-Belleuse and Guillemin. His entire production was always highly noticed and he was constantly honoured by contemporary critics, especially comparing him to ‘a prince of Industry and the king of bronze’ at the World Fair in 1878. There he received the Grand Prix of the World Fair and 28 medals from collaborators. His glory did not fade over the years, since the critics thanked Barbedienne at the 1889 World Fair as a master to the other bronze artists by the always exemplary quality of his bronzes.
