It is still awarded. It was created in 1903 with the name of Honour medal of the Municipal and Rural Police and was designated as the French Police Honour Medal from 1936 to 1996.

History:

It was established by the decree of 3rd April 1903, at the request of Émile Combes, Minister of the Interior, under the name of "Honour medal of the Municipal and Rural Police" and was awarded to officers with at least 20 years of impeccable service not including military service.
