Massive Ceremonial pig killer " Atata "
Ambrym Island, Vanuatu

Hard and heavy wood, Beautiful patina with old red, white and blue pigments 

In Vanuatu, this type of club was used during pig sacrifices, within grade societies. According to Rodman (in Kaufmann, Boulay and Huffman, 1996: 165), "in order to attain a new rank, an individual must accumulate and kill pigs whose defenses are at various stages of growth. The more the defenses are developed, the higher the rank, the greater the prestige of the individual attaining that rank ". The elaborately decorated Janus head, as here, contributed to the prestige of their owner.
