The history of Gitane dates back to 1923 when Marcel Brunelière (1893-1973) started a forge and agricultural recovery workshop in Machecoul. He started making bicycle parts and started assembling bicycles for the brands G.M.B and Marbru. In 1930 he brought out his own bicycles on the market under the name Gitane. From 1953 onwards, they produced mopeds and motorcycles using Ydral, VAP and Mistral built-in engines from 49cc to 173cc. In 1960, the company name changed from Gitane to S.A. Micmo Cycles Gitane des Cycles & Motocycles Machecoul, Loire Inf. but continued to sell bikes under the name Gitane.
