Beautiful Akuaba Doll from the Ashanti tribe of Ghana. 
It was carved in a single piece of wood. 
In good condition, with traces of wear and age.

Among the Ashanti people in Ghana, women desiring to have children carry these Akuaba dolls in their clothes, on their backs. 

Before and during the pregnancy, the doll is treated as if it were a true child, and it is covered with decorative beads. 

Once the Akuaba doll has fulfilled its function, the mother of the desired child will either place it on her house altar, where it will be worshipped in a sanctuary, or pass it on to the next generation. 

Traditionally, these Akuaba dolls have a large, round and flat head, reminding its origins as a depiction of the moon goddess, associated to fertility. 

Height: 31 cm. 
Width of the head: 13 cm. 
Bottom part: depth 5 cm, width 6.5 cm.
