Provenance:
Object collected in the cellar of a house in Brussels.  This object was transmitted to us by the son of a collector who had travelled in Mali, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

A wooden figure of a woman with a dome-shaped head and an oblong face. The hair is pulled back and hangs down on the sides of the head in two pigtails. 
The facial features depict a straight forehead ridge, small round eyes, a long nose and an open mouth with fleshy lips. The long neck sits on two flat wide shoulders on which the arms and breasts hang. The torso is long and ends in a suspended belly, everything carved with geometric designs. The short legs are folded at the knees and rest on a bulging base.  The arms extend towards the back and hold the small silhouette of a child with its hair arranged in three crests.
 
Characters such as this one are known as Guandousou and are grouped with an Amal figure known as a Guantigui and several accompanying figures, known as Guannyeni, which act as servants and hold objects such as musical instruments and containers. These figures are at the heart of the Guan society led by the elders of the village. Only the elders are permitted to touch the statues and during festivities they apply oil to the surface and make sacrifices to them. The refinement of the features and the decoration assert the high regard given to feminine beauty and the power of fertility they consider sacred.
