 The Zaouli originates from the 1950s, from the Guro country (centre of Ivory Coast).

Ouinnaila lives in Zrabi Sehifla, in the Guro territory.  The mask from this village is the Djela.  One day, this man went to visit a neighbouring village and observed the Bulu, a dance practised over there.  It inspired him to create the Zaouli at his return, the daughter of Djela.  His first dancer was Voïzié. 

The beauty of Zaouli has led people to dance, it became very popular since it was adopted by all the Guro villages, and has spread among all the Ivorians. 

The Zaouli is a rejoicing dance during which the dancer expresses himself through his performances and exploits. The artist must then reveal his talent through the diversity, the originality, and the rapidity of his steps and figures that he performs. Since he can never repeat the same step without being discredited, the dancer engages in a true dance duel.

There are many different Zaouli masks.  These pieces are constantly crafted, since there is no limit.  Each mask represents a symbolic history of its own.
