Blanca Marsal

Luis Álvarez Catalá (Madrid, 1836- Madrid, October 4th, 1901) was a Spanish portrait artist and painter, director of the Museo Nacional del Prado between 1898 and 1901.
He participated in some painting exhibitions, where he won awards in 1889. In 1890, back in Madrid, he attended the Certamen Nacional de Bellas Artes, obtaining a first medal with La silla de Felipe II en el Escorial, a work that also obtained a gold medal in Berlin the following year.
In his works, mainly in the traditionalist ones, he demonstrated his good characterization of types and clothing. In the last period of his life, he painted numerous Asturian motifs. In the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias you can see El Filandón, a painting of Asturian customs painted with virtuous preciosity.  He was one of the most awarded Spanish painters of the nineteenth century abroad. The frame and the glass are a gift from the gallery, as may be seen at Catawiki’s page it cannot be subject to any claim.
