The "Philosophie de l'art" is a work by Hippolyte Taine (1828-1893), published in Paris in 1865, bringing together in a volume a series of lessons given by the author at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, on the nature and production of works of art. Taine started from the observation that all the products of the human spirit - and consequently works of art - can only be explained, just like natural forms, in the environment where they are born. A painting, a sculpture, a poem are never isolated; they are inevitably part of the body of work by their author and of the school to which they belong; and, in the final analysis, they depend on the general state of mind and morals, on the "moral temperature" of the time and of the society in which the artist lived.
