Leo Setz

Willem Hamel was born in 1860 as the son of a wealthy peat trader and was therefore able to take classes at the Rotterdam Art Academy in addition to his regular education at the trade school. Not long after that, he was able to execute the lessons he had learned from the academy as a decoration painter, but this was not the career he had in mind. He chose to study even further to become a painter at the academy of fine arts in Antwerp. After completion, he searched for a new environment with other topics to paint. 

Like many of his painting colleagues, he ended up in Drenthe for his inspiration. Instead of the artist colony in Zweeloo, Hamel chose the old village of Rolde (near Assen), where he liked to paint the woods. The top cityscape is therefore a rare exception in his oeuvre (Source: Galerie Muskee).

The work is from a private collection. The work is beautifully framed.
