Huib Luns, who was an influential designer before the Second World War, has modelled his design after the famous painting by Charles Howard Hodges, which is in the Rijksmuseum. An energetically looking, highly detailed trois-quart portrait in which the head protrudes from a high collar; in line with fashion at that time. Surrounded by a simple, thin laurel edge on a deepened background. The latter makes the portrait stand out more than is usual. The reverse tries to commemorate
King William I's great achievements in shipping, trade and industry by using symbols which are grouped around a banderole that reads "Je maintiendrai", the motto of the House of Orange. The lettering is conventional but the pointed numbers (1815–1840) are new.
