Jan Wingen was born in Cologne in 1874, but moved with his parents to Maastricht at the age of fourteen. He became a decoration painter there. In his scarce free time he got out to make sketches of the environment. In 1935 he moved to The Hague, where he worked out his sketches from Limburg in paintings. He also painted the surroundings of The Hague in a true-to-life reproduction, mainly landscapes, the sea, the dunes and clouded areas. When he got inspiration for painting, he first made a rough sketch, and then worked the paint with a palette knife. He could not be disturbed and worked very fast.
