This is a very beautiful old antique complete Master violin, labeled: Dominicus Montagnana! 

From 1731 by Dominicus Montagnana, almost 3 centuries old! 

Made in Italy; Venice (Venetiis)

The total size is 638 mm.   

The length of the body is 380 mm.

Inside label: Dominicus Montagnana. 

The wood is quite beautiful with its incredible red varnish (some of which is original). 

Part of the body has been repaired (see photos) by a professional and it is quite solid.  

Back: 2 pieces of flamed maple wood (the sides as well).  

Soundboard: 1 piece of high-grained spruce, reddish golden brown varnish. 

The neck, the fingerboard, the head, the scroll (personalized), the pegs and the pegbox are all in very good condition!!

Strings included along with the (André Theunis) bridge! 

No bow comes with 

the chin rest.

The estimated value of the lot is between 18 000 euros and 25 000 euros (expert).

And by extension the insurance warranty: between 18 000 and 20 000 euros (Allsesur Filiale AXA).

Dear musicians and/or collectors, this is your chance to acquire an extraordinary Italian violin. 

Montagnana (Dominicus), who started out humbly in Cremona, only belonged to that school for his first twenty years, which he spent there, working under the immediate supervision of Stradivarius.  

Well, to tell you the truth, Montagnana is a Venetian... 

Almost all of  Montagnana’s cellos, and these are his best instruments, are in England and Germany.  

(Gufuni means “philosophy” or better “Philosopher” etc in Old German.)

The first “Large Violins” and then the Alto violins began to interest musicians and were custom made on-demand. 

This large violin or viola is in very good condition with some old cracks that have been repaired very well.  

It has passed into André Theunis’, the “Bridge Master,” hands. It bears his name in ebony and the dominant strings. 

All I can say is that this is a gorgeous masterpiece! 

It has a powerful, deep, soft and rich sound. 

It comes with its transport case (viola) but no bow.
