Manila shawls are textile items manufactured by specialist workshops in South China’s coastal area. The shawls were transported to Spain from The Philippines, a colony until 1898, which kept until the middle of the 20th century an intense commercial and human relationship with Spain. Even today many Philippine traditions, specially in the Nothern islands, such as Luzon, have their roots in the European culture and in Catholicism. At the same time a creole minority of Spanish and mestizo origin has an important role in the country’s life, where there are still remains of the Spanish language - creole/chavacano from Zamboanga, creole from Davao-.

Shawls were packed in sumptuous, wax-sealed boxes, with painted decorations in mother-of-pearl or other luxurious materials, which go hand in hand with all the Manila shawl culture.
