Auguste BIja (Riga, Lithuania 1872 - Brussels 1957)

Very nice original statue (unique) in terracotta of symbolist or allegorical inspiration, representing a serene woman, sitting with crossed arms, reflective, eyes closed. Very nice "modernist" piece to exhibit in any type of interior.
according to the face, it might be an allegorical representation of Queen Astrid, whose Bija carved medals. To be checked?

Terracotta, original, in good condition (2 small chips at the foot of the base, easy to fix)

Auguste Bija, sculptor, creator of medals. Immigrated to Brussels in 1897. Training at the Academy of Brussels with Ch. Van der Stappen. Active in Brussels. Created figures, portraits, busts and allegorical compositions. Exhibited with the circle "Garland" in Brussels in 1909, at the second show of December of the national union of painters and sculptors of Belgium, in Brussels in 1939, at the 47th show of the art circle “Kunst en en kennis” in Ghent in 1946 (cf. Piron)
