A small Edwardian japanned metal cash box and key by Chubb & Son of 128 Queen Victoria Street, London.

Numerous examples can be seen on today’s market but Chubb were the makers of some of the best quality examples during the Edwardian period owing to their superior locks and detailed brass-work.

This example has much of its original jappaning with its familiar gilt and orange stripe detailing. With superb swan neck handle to the lid, it also has a makers plaque to the interior of the lid stating, “Chubb & Sons, Lock & Safe Company limited, 128 Queen Victorian Street, London” with the same written to the front of the box. It also contains its original lift out three section coin tray.

Chubb & Son were a rival in quality to Bramah throughout the nineteenth century and were founded in 1818 in Portsmouth. They went on to gain royal patronage beginning with George IV onwards and exhibited at the Great Exhibition.
