Oftentimes, it takes knowing what you don’t like, to learn what you do like. When Sebastian graduated, his parents gifted him a fountain pen from a well-known international brand. Though appreciative of the gesture, it didn’t write very well. On a quest for something better, Sebastian stumbled upon a vintage Pelikan piston filler at a flea market. Even in its pre-loved glory, the perfect ink flow from its flexible gold nib was a revelation — instilling in Sebastian a lifelong passion for writing instruments. Fascinated by the endless variety of materials and designs of the past, Sebastian views writing instruments as pieces of art. From the early use of hard rubber to more recent explorations of silver and colourful celluloid — each design is unique. Not to mention the endless types of filling mechanisms, fiercely battled in patent wars between the respective companies. Thankfully, the friendly community of pen enthusiasts is a more peaceful place, attributing to much of the daily joy of collecting. Sebastian frequents international fairs and pen shows to meet kindred spirits, and has worked as a consultant and advisor for various auction houses. He now shares his 20+ years of experience collecting, trading and repairing vintage and luxury pens with fellow collectors at Catawiki.
