Sometimes a passion is so contagious, the entire household gets on board. Justus Heutink comes from a family of religious icon collectors. His grandfather founded an icon museum, his parents dedicated their gallery to the antique wooden artworks and the walls at home are decorated with them, too. And so, at the youthful age of 12, Justus decided he should start his own collection. He began selling small travel icons at first, but he quickly took it to the next level by opening his own gallery. The enjoyment comes from all the different ways the objects can be interpreted. For starters, they’re religious symbols, depicting scenes that are meaningful to many viewers. They’re also historical, antique objects; each with their own story and imperfections. Some could have burning marks from standing next to oil lamps or church candles, others have water marks from long journeys at sea when sailors would bring them as lucky tokens. Lastly, they’re pieces of art; each unique to their painter’s technique. At Catawiki, Justus enjoys meeting like-minded specialists from around the world, and observing all the new artworks they bring to the table. A million different stories, scenes and origins, all connected by a wonderfully specific shared passion.
