This Showa-era woodblock print is a faithful reprint of Utagawa Hiroshige's masterpiece, "Plum Estate, Kameido" (Kameido Umeyashiki). Originally created between 1856 and 1858 as part of Hiroshige's celebrated series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo Hyakkei), it stands as one of the most iconic works from the later years of his career.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) is recognized as one of the foremost ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period, particularly renowned for his depictions of landscapes and famous locations.
This artwork employs a striking composition that juxtaposes a close-up view of a gnarled plum tree with a distant view of the estate beyond. Hiroshige’s signature use of perspective creates a dynamic sense of depth, inviting the viewer into the serene landscape. Through multiple layers of printing, the texture of the ancient tree is captured in remarkable detail. The Plum Estate at Kameido, known for its fragrant blossoms, was located near the Kameido Tenjin Shrine in what is now Kameido 3-chome, Koto Ward. This garden, owned by a farmer named Kiemon, became famous after being praised by Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune.
The enduring appeal of this print is highlighted by its influence on the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who created a painted reproduction of the scene.
This Showa reprint bears the marks of master craftsman Matsuda Torazō (carver) and Sato Taizo (printer), ensuring a high-quality reproduction of the original’s vibrant colors and intricate details.
Dimensions: approx. H 37.8 cm W 25.3 cm
