This dirham, minted in Damascus (Dimashq) during the Umayyad Caliphate, exemplifies the early Islamic coinage style. Its design, dominated by Qurʾanic inscriptions, reflects the Islamic focus on monotheism and divine sovereignty, replacing earlier iconographic designs with scriptural proclamations. The choice of Qurʾān 112 (Surah Al-Ikhlas) on the reverse highlights the central tenet of Islamic faith: the oneness of Allah.
