This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses. From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today. In 1877, just one year following the creation of the first ‘Trade Marks Registration Act’ in England, the brand name ‘GSC George Sandeman & Co.’ (in Sandeman casks since 1805) was officially listed, being one the world’s oldest registered trademarks still in use. Sandeman is since 2002 under the ownership of Sogrape, a leading family-owned fine wine company, founded in 1942 in Portugal, and operating in five continents. Sandeman has profited from its know-how, investments and footprint, namely in the Douro, where Sogrape is a prime land owner and leading player in the industry. The many prizes and awards received by Sandeman Vintage Ports are a reflection of the excellent work done in the recent years. Sandeman was in the founding family from 1790 until 1952, when it became a public company, before Seagram took possession in 1980. In 2000, when Seagram beverage business was sold, Sandeman briefly passed to Pernod Ricard prior to its acquisition by Sogrape in 2002. WINEMAKER: Luis Sottomayor. AWARDS/RECOMMENDATIONS 96 Points, Gold Medal, Decanter World Wine Awards 93 Points, James Suckling 92 Points, Wine Spectator 92 Points, Falstaff 91 Points, Wine Enthusiast 90 Points, International Wine & Spirit Competition 95 Points, Trophy Winner & Gold Medal, International Wine Challenge (2017 Vintage) 17.5 Points, Good Choice, Vinho Grandes Escolhas (2017 Vintage) 92-93 Points, Vert de Vin (2014 Vintage) 90 Points, Tom Cannavan (2014 Vintage) Gold Medal, Mundus Vini (2014 Vintage) WINE VARIETIES: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca & Tinto Cão. VINIFICATION The grapes were selected from plots at the Quinta do Seixo and Quinta do Vau, and also from certain farmers who have been working with us for a long time. It was vinified at the Quinta do Seixo Winery, using traditional Port Wine technology, with treading in granite wine presses and controlled temperature, to obtain the extraction of compounds that contribute to the color, aroma and the flavor of the wine. After the harvest the wine remains in the Douro region. It is transported to Vila Nova de Gaia the following spring, beginning the usual aging process in oak vats. During this period, it is frequently subjected to racking, analyses and tastings, which allows its evolution to be monitored. The final blend was made after the selection of wines whose characteristics reach the style level of L.B.V. Sandeman. TASTING NOTES Deep ruby color, almost opaque. Aroma of good intensity and complexity, slightly floral, with notes of bright red fruits, spices, curry, pepper, and some cocoa and chocolate, the result of good maturation and stoniness. It has good volume in the mouth, high-quality, well-polished tannins, well-integrated acidity, and notes of spices, pepper and curry. The finish is long-lasting. SERVING The formation of a deposit in the bottle is natural. It is recommended, after the 2nd year of bottling, that the wine be decanted before it is drunk. Serve at 16ºC-18ºC.
