South Arabian Stone Anthropomorphic Stele

This carved upright stone slab features a single face adorned with intricate hatching on three borders. The upper border is carved in relief, depicting three horned animals shown en face. The central field showcases a stylised human face with large, simplified eyes, a flaring nose, and coffee bean-shaped lips. The underside of the slab is flat. This item is accompanied by a custom-made modern stand for display.
South Arabian anthropomorphic stelae, stone monuments carved in human form, were produced from the early first millennium BC through the pre-Islamic period. These stelae are found primarily in present-day Yemen and were created by the ancient South Arabian cultures, including the Sabaeans, Minaeans, and Qatabanians. The stelae typically depict human figures in a stylised manner, often with minimal facial features.
The primary function of these stelae was commemorative and funerary. They were erected as grave markers or as part of memorial installations to honour the deceased, reflecting the importance of ancestor worship in South Arabian societies. Inscriptions on some stelae provide the names of the individuals they commemorate, along with genealogical information, which highlights the emphasis on lineage and family connections.
