Tomoko Yoneda - FREUD'S GLASSES - VIEWING A TEXT BY JUNG

This is a fantastic and very rare example of Japanese photographer Tomoko Yoneda's work titled FREUD'S GLASSES - VIEWING A TEXT BY JUNG from her major series “Between Visible and Invisible”. The black and white photographs feature the actual eyeglasses worn by historically influential modern intellectuals like Sigmund Freud and Tanizaki Jun’ichiro, paired with texts, photographs, musical scores, or other things that have some connection to them. In Yoneda's own words: “I try to present a glimpse of their historical background and lives, while trying to express the indomitable spirit they fought for what they believed,” This example shows shows a piece of writing by Carl Jung, who was Freud’s student but from whom he subsequently became estranged, as seen through the lens of a pair of glasses in the collection of the Freud Museum in London. The text criticizes Freud’s concept of the libido, leading us to wonder how Freud felt as he read what his former disciple had sent him. The silver gelatin print is in excellent condition and measures 30.5cm x 40.6cm while the image is 20.3cm x 20.3cm. In excellent condition the print is also signed, titled, dated and numbered by Tomoko Yoneda on the verso and is the sought after number 1 copy from an edition of 60. and the image also appears in the collection of Mori Art Museum, Princeton University Art Museum, Tokyo Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, British Council, Harvard Art Museum and was also exhibited at Art Basel and galleries around the world. Born in Hyogo, Japan, in 1965 Tomoko Yoneda currently lives and works in London. In her practice, Yoneda incorporates her laborious research in order to deal with the ideologies of the 20th century. The nature of her artmaking has taken her not only to places in Japan where the past wars and earthquakes are still traceable, but also to regions in both Western and Eastern Europe and Asia where people’s memories are still strongly ingrained. Yoneda probes into historical facts that are embedded in specific locations and objects through her photography, which recalls multi-layered memories offering a cornucopia of poetic sensibility behind each scene. Selected exhibitions: Crystals, ShugoArts, Tokyo, 2024; Echoes―Crashing waves, ShugoArts, Tokyo, 2022; Tomoko Yoneda, Fundación MAPFRE, Madrid, 2021; Dialogue with A.C., ShugoArts, Tokyo, 2019; 12th Shanghai Biennale 2018, Shanghai, 2018-19; Dialogue with Albert Camus, Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, 2018; Discordant Harmony, Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, 2015/ Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, 2016; The 10th Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju, 2014; Aichi Triennale, Aichi, 2013; We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness, Himeji City Museum of Art, Hyogo, 2014/ Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Tokyo, 2013; Arsenale 2012: The First Kyiv International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv, Ukraine, 2012; Japanese House, ShugoArts, Tokyo, 2011; An End is a Beginning, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 2008; Venice Biennale, The 52nd International Art Exhibition, Venice, 2007; A Decade After, Ashiya City Museum of Art and History, Hyogo, 2005; Beyond Memory and Uncertainty, Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo, 2003 Please note this item will be carefully packed and ship from the United Kingdom and the buyer is responsible for any applicable import taxes and duties.
