This Showa period Noh mask, crafted by the esteemed mask maker Ishizu Gyokushu, depicts the "Okina" (Old Man) character, a revered figure in Noh theater. The Okina mask represents a divine elder, a deity in the form of an aged man, and is central to celebratory Noh performances known as shūgenmono, which are intended to bless the nation with peace and abundant harvests. The mask features a smiling expression with deep wrinkles and a movable lower jaw, adding a lifelike quality to the character's joyful and wise demeanor.

In Okina performances, both the white and black Okina appear to convey blessings. The white Okina, portrayed by a Noh actor, and the black Okina, played by a Kyogen actor, together perform prayers for national stability and agricultural prosperity. Rooted in the ancient Japanese tradition of sangaku, Okina masks hold significant cultural value, representing the Japanese spirit of faith and prayer passed down through generations.

According to the artist, the mask will naturally accumulate dust over time, which enhances its character. It is recommended not to remove dust too frequently; if needed, a dry cloth or feather duster may be used lightly. Avoid using wet cloths to preserve the mask's delicate finish.

This mask shows signs of aging, including scuffs, stains, discoloration, paint chipping, scratches, and dust accumulation. Please review the photos carefully to assess its condition.

Dimensions: approx. H 18.5cm W 15.5 cm D 8.5 cm (The size does not include the part of beard)
