Pumoana Shell Trumpet by Gabel Watene - comes with COA

Gabel was trained by Master Carver Brian Flintoff, and his work is exquisite. This small replica of the wonderful conch trumpet (in Maori, He Putatara) represents the traditional Maori instrument used to precede an announcement. The conch shell has been mounted and bound onto a beautifully carved wood mouthpiece with paua shell inlay. A unique and lovely pendant or display ornament, this little Putatara cannot be played. There is a little hole in the shell, probably a little 'natural' flaw.

For comparison, I took photos of a playable Putatara by Brian Flintoff, and Gabel Watene's mini Putatara.

About Pumoana shell trumpet:: These shell trumpets also have a female, flute voice. A Bursa Bobo shell on a base with shell decorations or with a pair of carved bone whales as shown. They unite the world of Tangaroa, the Sea God, with the wood from Tāne, God of the Forest’s children.

About Taonga Puoro: In Maori Music traditions musical instruments are members of the families of the Gods. Tunes are named Rangi after the Sky Father to whom they ascend after being sounded and Rhythms come from the heartbeats of Papa, the Earth Mother. Their children, Hine pu te Hue, Tane, and Tawhiri Matea, their Great uncle Tangaroa, and a grandchild, Raukatauri, Goddess of flute music, are most of the ancestors of a wide range of musical instruments.

As in tradition, much of the work put into instruments was for their carved stories; therefore, I prefer to work to your budget while adding appropriate carving.

Traditionally, these treasures are given personal names, and you are invited to continue that tradition.
