This Edo period brass menuki pair features two intricate designs: one depicting a spear with a helmet and the other a spear with a large armor sleeve. In Japanese culture, the helmet (kabuto) symbolizes valor, protection, and the warrior spirit, while the armor sleeve represents strength, endurance, and defense. The addition of spears in both motifs emphasizes readiness for battle and the martial virtues held in high regard by the samurai class.

The menuki pair shows slight wear and patina consistent with age, adding to their historical character. The paulownia wood box has some scratches, and the inside of the lid bears remnants of four removed paper labels. Please review the photos for a detailed view of the condition.

These menuki are not only fine examples of Edo-period craftsmanship but also symbolic artifacts that reflect the spirit and aesthetics of the samurai tradition, making them valuable additions to any collection of Japanese antiques.
