Maartens Maartens was the pseudonym of J.M.W van der Poorten Schwartz (1858-1915). He wrote,
in English, the first Dutch detective story: The Black Box Murders, 1889). In his time he was justly celebrated and good friends with a.o. J.M. Barrie, Thomas Hardy, Edmond Gosse and other famous English writers. his skillfully written novels, stories and poems are nowadays unjustly somewhat forgotten. They form a fascinating insight in the literature of the European fin-de-siecle though.



1. J.M.W van der Poorten Schwartz - Julian. A Tragedy in Five Acts - London, Remington, 1886. 1st and only ed. Cloth. Decadent play set in Byzantine, with a touch of influence by Baudelaire and Swinburne.

2. Idem. - A Sheaf of Sonnets - London, Remington, 1888. 1st and only ed. - Signed by author on titlepage. Rare. Cloth.

3. As Maarten Maartens. Her Memory - London, MacMillan, 1898. 1st ed. Cloth. Lively novel set in Toscany.

Overall in good condition. All ex bibliotheca the Maartens scolar W.G. van Maanen.
