This book first published in 1767, one year early. Adam Ferguson was Scottish Enlightenment philosopher.
The Essay established Ferguson's reputation in Britain and throughout Europe. In the second section of the third part of the Essay, while discussing the history of political establishments, Ferguson states "Every step and every movement of the multitude, even in what are termed enlightened ages, are made with equal blindness to the future; and nations stumble upon establishments, which are indeed the result of human action, but not the execution of any human design

A rare & valuable copy
Broad bound in contemporary calf, label spine in gilt, spine with centre crack.
Good condition for its age and overall valuation.
Previous owner's name on top corner of title page.
Page discoloured as, relatively binding remain tight, one part crack and can be seen in photo.
464 pages, dimension: 20.5 x 13.5 cm.
