【Product details】
This set of three ukiyo-e woodblock prints titled "Yubin Hochi Shinbun" (Postal News) was created in 1875 by the renowned Japanese artist Taiso Yoshitoshi (大蘓芳年), also known as Tsukioka Yoshitoshi 月岡芳年 (1839-1892), in collaboration with the famous rakugo storyteller Sanyutei Encho (三遊亭円朝, 1839-1900). These prints were part of a popular series that depicted sensational stories from the Yubin Hochi Shinbun newspaper, a leading publication during the Meiji era.
Taiso Yoshitoshi, often referred to as "the last master of ukiyo-e," was known for his bold compositions and meticulous detail. His works span various genres, from historical and warrior prints to depictions of beautiful women (bijin-ga) and genre scenes. Collaborating with Sanyutei Encho, who was celebrated for his new rakugo performances and ghost stories, this series masterfully combined visual storytelling with captivating narratives.
Print on the Right: "A Policeman Rescued a Young Woman at Night in a Graveyard" (Yoru ni Hakaba de Keisatsukan ga Wakai Josei o Hogo Shita) - A powerful depiction of a nighttime rescue by a policeman in a graveyard, filled with the characteristic tension and dark ambiance seen in Yoshitoshi's work.
Print in the Middle: "An Englishman Raping a Wine Shopkeeper's Daughter" - A dramatic scene capturing a violent encounter in a wine shop, filled with chaotic movement and a sense of urgency. This illustration reflects the cultural and social challenges of the time.
Print on the Left: "Okiyo, Daughter of a Gardener in Mukojima and a Foreigner" - A more serene composition that shows a meeting between a Japanese woman, Okiyo, and a Western man. This print reflects the cultural exchanges taking place during the Meiji era as Western influences began to permeate Japanese society.
The text in each print, written by Sanyutei Encho, complements the vivid visuals by providing context and narrative, making these works both art and storytelling in one.
The prints have signs of aging, including stains, tears, creases, and small holes. Please examine the photos carefully to assess the condition.
Dimensions: approx. H 37.3 cm W 25.1 cm
