Mid-19th century Dutch solid silver perfume box, also called "lodereindoosje". Oblong tall form of a tea caddy with lobbed bombé corners; the base and lid are embossed with floral friezes. The front of the box is engraved with a village and church landscape and the three remaining sides are engraved with scrolling foliage. The hinged domed lid is canted in a hexagonal form and engraved with scrolls to the central cartouche.

Lovely piece of history that can be used as a trinket, snuff or pill box today.

Assay office: Leeuwarden (Minerva’s head with “F”)
Date: 1858 ("Y")
Silver purity: 833 silver (lion passant “2”)

Scent boxes, peppermint boxes, loddereins, pomanders and pouncet boxes were all used throughout different periods as small containers for holding various aromatic substances. The earliest examples used oranges, as they were considered a safeguard against infection.

By the time of the Georgian era, powerful aromatic vinegars were developed and a tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the liquid, would be contained beneath the interior grill or perforated cover. The intensity of the aromatics resulted in a drastic reduction in the size of the containers which held them, now called aromatic vinegar boxes.

Very good antique condition. Few tiny dings appropriate to age and use, mostly to base; the front of the lid curves a little bit in on itself.
