The Rape of Proserpina is based on the Latin myth of Proserpina, which is found in both Ovid's Metamorphoses and Claudian's De Raptu Proserpinae.

This print was made appr. 1786 in Paris a few years before the French revolution. High standard works entitled Galerie du Palais Royal were ordered by the King Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723) to show the wealth of his art collection. All of them were done by the best engravers from different countries.
