This exquisite Meiji era two-drawer box features beautiful maki-e designs depicting flowers such as daffodils, cherry blossoms, and peonies. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The box showcases the tamenuri technique, characterized by its layers of translucent lacquer, creating a rich, deep finish.

The daffodils symbolize new beginnings and rebirth. Cherry blossoms represent the transient nature of life and beauty, while peonies signify wealth and honor.

The inside of the drawers and the bottom of the box feature nashiji, a technique using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.

The upper four corners of the box are adorned with detailed butterfly metalwork, adding an extra touch of elegance.

The box has wear, cracks, and chips in the lacquer due to age. Many repairs have been made. Please refer to the photos for details on its condition.
