A very telling description of the Russian state at the eve of WWI and the October Revolution. At that time the imperial state included countries as Finland, Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic Republics, currently independent states. Furthermore it describes excursions to distant destinations as Tehran (then capital of Persia), Port Arthur (then a Chinese but Japanese-conquered port leased temporarily to Russia, now called Lüshunkou District in China) and Peking (Beijing) via the Trans-Siberian.
