Julien Causse was a French Art Nouveau sculptor known for his small-scale figurines depicting allegorical and mythological subjects. Most often focusing on portraits of female subjects, Causse’s works are composed in bronze and marble with glass and wire ornamentation, in some cases also functioning as a lamp or a vase. His oeuvre bears the hallmark elements of Art Nouveau sculpture: While maintaining a level of sensual realism, they accentuate and exaggerate the curvilinear elements of each figure and decorative element. Born on January 28, 1869 in Bourges, France, he studied under the esteemed sculptors Alexandre Falguière and Agathon Léonard in Paris, and later began exhibiting at the Salon des Artists Francais. His work is now held in the collection of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. Causse died in 1914 in Paris, France.
