Superb Egyptian Djed pillar amulet in faience from the Old Kingdom (2592-2118 B.C). The djed pillar, depicted as a tall shaft with horizontal lines at the top, is one of the most ancient Egyptian symbols (it already appeared during the Third Dynasty, around 2700 BC, as a decorative element in sacred buildings) and remained one of the most attested throughout the history of Ancient Egypt. Originally it was probably the representation of a tree with pruned branches or a bunch of ears of wheat. With the passing of the centuries and the spread of the cult of Osiris, lord of the Underworld, it became the symbol par excellence of this divinity - the djed pillar is then sometimes designated as the "spine of Osiris".
