"A collaboration between two of the world's most important photographic institutions, this project brings to light the histories and strengths of each. It was at George Eastman House, in 1975, that the exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape was mounted. That same year, the Center for Creative Photography opened in Tucson, Arizona. As explored in the present catalogue, this moment- -the so-called photography boom-marked a turning point for the medium, its full acceptance as expressive and collectible art. At Eastman House, New Topographics was part of an ongoing commitment to current photography within the context of a historic collection established in 1947. The exhibition signaled both contemporaneity and continuities with photography of the past, richly represented in the museum's holdings. Concurrently, as the newly founded Center for Creative Photography set out to collect photographic archives, it acknowledged that bodies of work being produced now had value for practitioners and historians of the future. More than three decades later, the field of photography has expanded even beyond what its twentieth-century champions could have predicted. Among them we acknowledge Beaumont Newhall, director of Eastman House and consultant to the founders of Center for Creative Photography, and James Enyeart, the Center's second Director and later the sixth Director of George Eastman House. In recognizing these men, we also acknowledge the history our two institutions share. As repositories of photographic collections, we now can reach larger audiences who demonstrate great enthusiasm for the medium. And we can devise new ways of engaging these viewers. Here, close scrutiny of an exhibition from the past results in a better understanding of our present moment.
