An Akuaba fertility puppet, Ashanti, Ghana, the abdomen is the handle, the chest doubles and welcomes two pairs of breasts, beaded ringed necks, two long thin plank head with at the bottom simple features of a small mouth, long nose, diagonal eyebrows, two small eyes, the back of the plank is also decorated with geometric patterns; fine ritual patina, traces of ritual use, some small cracks. The object is widely referred to as the fertility figure, also known as the Akuaba doll among the Akans of Ghana….
The object in question is the depiction of a female body, an exhibition of the Akan concept of an ideal woman. The features include a flat forehead with an elongated “ring-like neck shape” which reflects Akan standard of beauty. The understanding is that a woman with this type of neck is well-fed, healthy, and strong, a paragon of beauty and affluence. The flat broad forehead also is an embodiment of wisdom, while the accentuated breasts and hips with beads worn arounds the waist is the Akan ideal of womanhood, a depiction of woman as the giver of life. The beads worn around the waist has both aesthetic and symbolical meanings. In terms of beauty, beads were worn as an ornament for beautification, just as portrayed by the wearing of the jewels around her ears. It was also believed that wearing of beads around the waist is sexually appealing, while beads were also worn to broaden the hips and shape the waist for reproductive purposes. It is important to note that in the Akan society, and indeed in most Ghanaian culture, an ideal woman is one that carries and bears children. Clearly, ideas of beauty, sexuality and reproduction were the very essence of womanhood or femininity in the Akan society.”

Συλλέγω για 25 χρόνια και ασχολούμαι με την αφρικανική τέχνη για 20 χρόνια. Εμπνεύστηκα από το πάθος του πατέρα μου για συλλογή, που μας άφησε μια συλλογή "Γερμανικών Αποικιών". Σπούδασα εθνολογία, ιστορία τέχνης και συγκριτικό δίκαιο στο Freie Universität Berlin χωρίς να αποφοιτήσω. Μετά από εκτεταμένα ταξίδια στο Καμερούν, το Μάλι, την Ακτή του Ελεφαντοστού, τη Μπουρκίνα Φάσο, το Τόγκο και τη Γκάνα, έζησα στο Μπαμάκο και το Σεγκού για 10 χρόνια. Στο Segou διαχειρίστηκα τη γκαλερί "Tribaloartforum", η οποία έπρεπε να κλείσει το 2012 λόγω του πολέμου στο Μάλι. Στη συνέχεια εγκαταστάθηκα στο Λομέ Τόγκο, όπου έχουμε ένα υποκατάστημα. Πριν από 16 χρόνια, ιδρύθηκε η Jaenicke-Njoya GmbH και έκτοτε είμαι ο διαχειριστής της. Το 2018 ανοίξαμε μια γκαλερί στο Βερολίνο Charlottenburg απέναντι από το Παλάτι Charlottenburg και κοντά στο Μουσείο Picasso Berggruen. Η ομάδα μας αποτελείται από 6 υπαλλήλους. Ένας αρχαιολόγος, ένας ιστορικός τέχνης, ένας φωτογράφος, ένας οικονομικός ελεγκτής, ένας μόνιμος εκπρόσωπος του υποκαταστήματός μας στο Λομέ του Τόγκο και ένας αναπληρωτής διευθυντής στο Βερολίνο / Τόγκο.
