【Product details】
This remarkable wakizashi from the Edo period is mounted in a black lacquer scabbard and features a full mounting. The blade is complemented by a round iron openwork sword guard and includes a kozuka (small knife).
The black lacquer scabbard includes a kozuka with a shakudō nanako ground and a inlay of a dragon motif. The kozuka was housed in a slot on the body-side of the sword when worn at the waist. In emergencies, it could be thrown like a throwing star.
Other fittings also feature shakudō nanako ground with inlays depicting flowers and a boar. The dragon symbolizes power, strength, and good fortune, while the boar represents courage and determination. Shakudō nanako refers to a metalworking technique where a surface is covered with tiny, round, fish egg-like patterns engraved with a chisel.
The sword comes with a copy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate, as the original document will be returned to the authorities. According to the certificate, the sword is categorized as a wakizashi, with a length of 43.7 cm, a curvature of 1.3 cm, and one peg hole). The signature on the blade is unclear. The certificate, issued in Shimane Prefecture, is numbered 11660 and was originally granted on February 23, Showa 40 (1965), with a re-issue on March 16, Heisei 19 (2007).
There are scratches and considerable rust due to aging. There is a tiny chip on the very tip of the blade. The lacquer paint on the scabbard is chipped and cracked. Please refer to the photos for the detailed condition of the item. The display stand is not included with this lot.
Length of the blade: 56cm
Total length including scabbard: 63.5 cm
