【Product details】

This exquisite tray is a superb example of maki-e, a Japanese lacquerware technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create luxurious patterns. Originating from the late Edo period, the tray is adorned with motifs of paulownia flowers, paired with twin golden dragons surrounded by cloud-like golden patterns, symbolizing power and auspiciousness. The edges are intricately decorated with interlocking circles and arabesque patterns, alongside representations of the phoenix and dragon, signifying good fortune and celestial power.

The warm golden accents on a rich, dark lacquer background create an object of sophistication and allure. The tray's legs, fashioned to resemble cat's paws, add an element of playfulness to the traditional artistry.

The wooden box, essential for the protection and storage of such a valuable piece, bears the date “Kaei 4, June,” indicating its creation over a century and a half ago.

Please note, the tray shows signs of wear consistent with its age, including surface marks and minor chips. Repair work is evident at the base of the legs. The wooden box displays signs of historical woodworm and carries the patina of time. Refer to the photos for a detailed understanding of the item's condition.
